Muncie Residents Can Text 911

MUNCIE, Ind. - In an emergency, Muncie residents are able to text 911.

In a Facebook post, the Delaware County E911 Communications Center announced that they, and all PSAPs in the State of Indiana, are able to receive text messages when a call can't be made safely.

To text 911, Muncie residents can simply open their Messages and compose a new message to the 911 number.

The center urges people not to use slang, abbreviations, emojis, or photos when texting 911. It also advises against adding 911 to group texts or social media platforms, texting while driving, or testing the service without a real emergency or drill.

"Voice is still the best and fastest way to reach 911 if you can safely speak," the center said. "Texting is a great tool — but it’s meant for situations where silence could save lives."
