MUNCIE, Ind. (THE CI) - “No Trump, no KKK, no fascist USA!”

This was one chant that the cousin of Luz House, a Freshman at Muncie Central High School, recorded during today’s walkout protest against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

The CI received consent from House’s mother to share their story and media.

“I chose to protest today because I strongly believe that the youth should be more involved in politics, especially when it affects us and our future,” House told The CI.

“I also believe that our voices should be heard, and that our current state of America affects us more than ever, and that if nothing gets done, then we’re not going to progress in history like we need to,” House continued.

“ICE is setting us back more than ever, in my opinion, as well especially by killing people in the streets in broad daylight. We have severe political issues that [are] not getting fixed, and just even by the smallest bit speaking out can make a change, and I hope other youth sees that.”

The CI reached out to Andy Klotz, Chief Communications Officer for Muncie Community Schools (MCS).

In an email, Klotz said, “For the relatively small number of students who participated in the demonstration, we’re glad they expressed themselves peacefully, and we’re even happier everyone went home safely.”

“Students who were not excused to leave school by their parents or guardian will face appropriate consequences as outlined in our Student Handbook,” Klotz continued. “These consequences will be specific to each student based on their personal school history.”

The CI has not confirmed a number of protesters, however, photos obtained by The CI show at least a couple dozen. Trinity Rea with The Ball State Daily News reported there was “around 50 people.”

According to our media partners at Public News Service, several central Indiana high school students walked out on Monday, February 2nd.

Terri Dee of the Indiana News Service reported that “[s]treets near North Central, Brebeuf Jesuit and Noblesville high schools were blocked while the peaceful protestors waved signs and chanted.”

The CI will update this story as more information comes in.
