MUNCIE, Ind. - The Cardinal Independent has filed its second Indiana Access to Public Records Act (APRA) request with Ball State University's Office of General Counsel in a month.
The recent request, filed on October 10 at 2:06 p.m., aims to answer how much money Ball State University is funding university-managed student media.
A list of all funding sources, as well as contact information for faculty members overseeing university-managed student media, are included in this request.
At a protest on September 24, Jeffrey Dreyer, former associate multimedia editor for the Ball State Daily News (The Daily), claimed that a third of The Daily's funding comes from the university.
"That's $115,000, by the way," Dreyer disclosed.
In his speech, Dreyer said he was fired from The Daily, stating the firing was "for [his] participation in the student group Young Democratic Socialists of America [(YDSA)]."
According to The Daily, Dreyer's participation with the YDSA "in a leadership capacity came to light, thus creating a conflict of interest via political bias for the paper."
The CI has received an initial response to this APRA request on 4:56 p.m. the same day, October 10.
The CI recently filed another APRA request, aiming to obtain records relating to the firing of Director of Health Promotion and Advocacy Suzanne Swierc. Swierc, who was fired following a leaked, friends-only response regarding conservative activist Charlie Kirk, is suing Ball State President Geoffrey Mearns in his official and individual capacities. That APRA request was filed on September 22 at 2:00 p.m., and an initial response has been received on September 23 at 10:27 a.m.
At the time of publication, no further correspondence has been received.
